BIO:
Half Giraffe was founded by Ian Hughes, and it’s origin story dates back to the early 2010’s. Ian put the band together as a vessel to perform his more ambitious compositions. Over time, the group has put out three albums, incurred a handful of lineup changes, and even changed names in early 2024. The tunes drift between adventurous, textural, cinematic pieces and funky horn-driven groovers. The vibe is spacey, but very energetic. They always stress tightness as a unit, and group improvisation, but expect to see some ripping solos from all five members.
The band is comprised of mostly PNW natives; Victor Puentes on trumpet, Mark Hubenthal on Saxophone, Ian Hughes on guitar, Trevor Pelletier on electric bass, and Tyler Graves on drums. Being a jazz and funk jam session enthusiast, Ian met all of these guys at different sessions over the years and they all joined up at different points.
“Suave, melodious jazz funk that should appeal to fans of Chick Corea, Grant Green, Donald Byrd, and Ben Sidran.” -Dave Segal with “The Stranger”
“The musicianship and interplay is impeccably tight, as are the arrangements and compositions the band comes through with, but they aren’t so complex and challenging that you can’t just sit back in your chair and bob your head along to their songs” – Northwest Music Scene
